Unix Administration Manager in Baltimore

Our client is seeking a seasoned, hands-on technical manager who will be the primary administrator for the Baltimore location. They will manage and maintain the organization's UNIX servers so as to ensure suitable performance, security, required levels of availability and to provide Service delivery support. 

They will provide direction, leadership and technical expertise for the Unix Administrative team. Manage and oversee the support, implementation and optimization of all UNIX server platforms on an enterprise level. Lead staff and manage the priorities and progress of projects and initiatives as directed. 

Other key objectives include the means to standardize support, testing and system integration and increase effectiveness of processes and policies to comply with government requirements. 

Essential responsibilities will include: 

* Primary administrator for organization's UNIX systems; 
* Assist Oracle DBA in day to day operations and maintenance; 
* Ensure performance and availability of the UNIX systems; 
* Manage and co-ordinate the application of OS patches and changes as required; 
* Manage and co-ordinate system user accounts and security; 
* Perform system recovery actions as required; 
* Liaison with hardware suppliers ensure system performance and availability; 
* Maintain current knowledge on all technical issues related to UNIX and related technologies; 
* Installation of software and hardware products; 
* Administration of printing needs; 
* Evaluate and recommend hardware and software purchases; 
* Negotiate repairs and purchases with vendors; 
* Ensure UNIX systems are properly managed and maintained at the proper patch levels 
* Ensure UNIX systems are properly backed up and that restores are tested and timed 
* Ensure that UNIX Sys Admin's maintain their technical proficiency to keep up with emerging technologies as well as the manager's own skills 
* Improved quality of project deliverables related to UNIX system changes 
* Early identification and proactive management of UNIX system issues and risks 
* Improve communication with staff and other IT departments 
* Improve people and resource management 
* Comply with industry standards on data retention and availability; 
* Responsible for managing a team and establishing goals and objectives, managing performance and deliverables, and developing and mentoring staff from a global workforce of associates and vendors that may be operating from various time-zones. 
* Mentor and expand the team's talent base. Provide technical expertise and leadership. 
* Provide clear leadership and direction to enhance the team's value to the business. 
* Develop and adhere to defined policies and procedures to ensure proper systems deployment, support, growth and maintenance. 
* Prioritize and oversee all activities of the team. 
* Build collaborative and constructive relationships with terminal operations and IT division. 
* Other duties as assigned. 

REQUIREMENTS: 

* BS degree, Information Technology or related field. 
* At least 3 years experience in installing, configuring and administering UNIX systems (preferably HP & IBM AIX), required. 
* Tertiary qualifications in computer discipline, and/or specialist training in UNIX systems administration. 
* At least 2 years HACMP experience and management. 
* Minimum 2 years experience in establishing and maintaining a security regime under UNIX. 
* Minimum 2 years experience with TCP/IP and related networking protocols. 
* Exceptional analytical skills and ability to troubleshoot problems. 
* Ability and willingness to work flexible hours. 
* Oracle experience/familiarity. 
* Knowledge of all aspects of software and hardware 
* Strong project and team management skills (e.g., planning, budgetary control, people management etc.) 
* Problem analysis and problem resolution at both a strategic and functional level. 
* 3 or more years experience managing group of IT Professionals 
* Strong customer orientation. 
* Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills. 
* Ability and to work flexible hours. 
* Ability to travel as required. 

Must be fully and immediately eligible to work in the US, have some management background, as well as experience with HACMP, HP-UX & AIX.
