addendum:

I figured out how to change the screen res for the resultant mpg file...
and, I thought it might be useful for someone if I posted
the full command I googled and added the res. to:

$ mencoder -of mpeg -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg1video -oac mp3lame -vf scale=-1:presize=ntsc GEDC0037.MOV -o GEDC0037.mpg

Don't know if mp3 is "best" for the audio part.
Maybe I should see if there's a mpeg2 video option ?????
