[CALUG] moonlight ( silverlight) plus codecs ?

Moonlight 2 is rather useless.  Moonlight 4 is none-too-easy to get working on many distros.

Even when you do an user-only Moonlight 4 setup (like a "local plug-in"), I found it does not work.  There are some missing support and dependencies that are not part of the distro's package system, and a PITA to figure out.

If anyone knows of working Debian (or Ubuntu) and Fedora options, I'm all ears.

Otherwise, agree with Jeremy on the codecs.  Don't bother.  I also don't know what the terms/license would be if you're using those codecs outside of Moonlight, if it's even technically possible.  So it's not a solution to the larger codec detail, which plagues all OSes (including Windows).

There are legal codecs for many things on Linux, or those you can license legitimately as well.  There is also VLC and Mozplugger.  E.g., on Fedora, the RPM Fusion project and its Non-Free repositories.  Again, consider licensing codecs and/or keep indemnification issues in mind, for the ones that do have code and/or IP licensing requirements (even when the implementation is free).

If you have a need for Moonlight, I'd recommend the not-yet-stable
Moonlight 4 Preview instead of the Moonlight 2 packaged in many
distros. On the other hand, it's easiest to install from your distro's
repositories. Like I said before, most people have no need for
Silverlight/Moonlight. I sure don't.
