I've had good luck running vanilla Debian on my laptop. I tried
installing Ubuntu on it ages ago and it refused to even boot unless I
disabled ACPI (granted the laptop was fairly new at the time), but
Debian installed fine and everything has worked since then (excepting
my evil bcm43xx wifi chipset which only began to work a few kernel
releases ago when they finally got my revision working with the b43
driver--now *everything* works).
