Does anyone know of any universal methods to set the DISPLAY to direct X 
traffic to a dummy device so that a GUI can run even if no windowing 
environment is running?

Once upon a time in a galaxy far far away, I found some apps that ran when 
DISPLAY was set to "/dev/null", but that is hardly universal, was a very 
unique case, and was an awful hack.

Are there any tricks for doing anything like this?
