[CALUG] skype on 8.04, libasound minor version problem?

Hi,
    I can't upgrade my Ubuntu 8.04, but I just need to get
the libasound2 up to 1.0.18 which is required by Skype.
I can't seem to find a way to force it to upgrade, even
though it only depends on libc6 >= 2.7, which is there.
I downloaded libasound2_1.0.18-1ubuntu9_i386.deb,
but for some reason, when I tried to install it with synaptic,
it didn't even recognize it as a package (i.e. in the file
dialog, it was greyed out so I couldn't choose it.)  Is there
no way to do what I'm trying to do?
