thanks all,

Now have pidgin working - at least as far as lurking
a group.

part of pidgin is OK, some is kludgy.
For example, /LIST -someoption  ALWAYS
returns a new window with full list of a thousand ... 

googles search returns for decent pidgin and irc help really suck.
took awhile but I have found what I need.. so far.
