16-bit CompactFlash (ATA) or, better yet, newer CFast (SATA), is also an option.

I've been using ATA-to-CF for the last decade.  And newer CFast is designed for SATA, same 7-pin data, although a different 17-pin power (but easily converted from 15-pin SATA power, or even 4-pin Molex).

Why not a USB stick, or even a small USB disk? Faster, more reliable, 
and can be modified.
