T-mobile pay-as-you-go.  Yes, you can transfer a landline to mobile (just takes about a week, instead of a day or two, with a mobile).  You only need to re-fill it with 100 minutes for $10 every 90 days or so.    If you don't mind paying $100/year for 1000 minutes, you can extend your minutes indefinitely (paying $100 extends the minutes for a year, so they keep compounding).

Cheapest option.  I only call to check messages.  I've had my home phone on this plan for almost 2 years.
