I just started at SourceFire this month. My first task was to blow away
Windows 7 and install the Linux distro of my choice. These days Snort
runs on custom hardware and the OS is all Linux. Most of the code to be
supported is C. There is some Perl code, but it is mainly used for
handling configuration data.
My cube is next to the team that is looking to hire, so I can tell you
that the job is 3rd level software support. It's a great opportunity for
someone who has a couple years of programming experience to step up to
the next level. They have found several C programmers who don't know
Linux, which doesn't do them any good. So if you know anyone who might
be a good match, tell them to apply.

*Responsibilities:*

Reproducing customer issues escalated from support
Interacting with customer support to gather sufficient information
to reproduce customer problems.

Identifying and fixing problems in released products
*
Interacting with product development for assistance in fixing
problems and ensuring fixes are included in future releases
*
Creating test cases to verify fixes
*
Building and testing patches
*
Working with customers to tune their systems for improved performance
*Required Skills: *
*
Bachelors degree in Computer Science or related field (or equivalent)
*
2+ years of experience with C and Perl
*
Strong troubleshooting skills
*
Basic Unix system administration skills
*
Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills
*
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
*
Ability to learn new skills and apply them quickly
*
Ability to work with legacy code to fix problems
*
Strong verbal and written communication skills
*
Ability to participate in on-call rotation in order to provide
24/7 support
*Desired knowledge, skills and abilities:*

Experience with network security tools such as Snort, nmap,
nessus, ethereal, tcpdump, and tcpreplay

Prior experience as part of a software development team
