Just wanted to pass along the fact that Red Hat has announced it's
latest Platform (RHEL) Developer Program [1] at Summit this week.
The main thing to note about this new announcement is that there's a
new $99 "Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) Developer Suite" subscription
[2] dedicated to just platform (RHEL) with greatly expanded platform
add-ons and entitlements. Virtually all add-ons are included -- i.e.,
not just the typical Server base plus Client/Workstation bases now
added too, but the additional Advanced Platform add-ons, plus several
others, along with the Extended Update Support (EUS) offering. This
now makes is simple to prototype for any RHEL product release, EUS
Z-stream and the various add-on entitlement offerings. Commercially
supported, Developer subscriptions are now also available in
twenty-five (25) entitlement packs with Service Level Agreements
(SLAs) from two (2) business day down to just four (4) business hour
response times. [2] This is in addition to the Knowledgebase Access
and other Portal value-add with any subscription (the primary reason I
maintain mine).
There is a dedicated documentation set for the Tools [3] (publicly
accessible), in addition to the RHEL documentation itself [4] (which
is also, always publicly accessible).
I know a lot of you are like me, consultants, level 2/3 type support
and other Linux professionals that do a lot of Enterprise Linux
deployments, management and related package building, plus the KB
stuff that really details things that aren't in normal Google searches
that come up with a lot of "enthusiast" type answers. This new
offering fills in a number of the gaps where the more legacy Developer
subscriptions stopped at Base with a couple of add-ons, and possibly a
few things that aren't always built by the community "Enterprise Linux
(EL) Rebuilds." I've been paying for two (2) entitlements since RHN
first offered them on RHL back in 2002 (which were turned into RHEL
developer entitlements), but that's just me. I know many others leverage
Fedora for more leading-edge development, as do I as well. So I thought
I'd pass it along, as it's something I've been asking for some time now.
Especially if your company won't assign you a RHEL entitlement for
development/packaging for cost reasons (especially under higher SLAs,
let alone with add-ons), you can now point them at this new,
inexpensive offering designed specifically for developers/packagers.
And if you want support, the 25-pack is only $200/user. If you work
on various projects that "wait" on some of the "EL Rebuilds" for
updates, you might want to take a look at this $99 Developer
subscription offering as well. I've lauded this option for years with
many projects who "complain" about the speed of community "EL Rebuild"
updates, but barked about RHEL's cost. It's really aimed exactly at
these projects (let alone there are ways to get _free_ entitlements --
e.g., via Fedora EPEL maintainership).
Again, this is the "RHEL Developer Suite," which is different than the
prior (and still available) "JBoss Developer Studio" (which comes with
JBoss and RHEL + only a couple of add-ons, not the full spectrum).
