Business Analysis Day will be held on June 8=2C 2013Technical Analysis Day =
will be held on August 10=2C 2013Baltimore GiveCamp 2013 will be held on th=
e weekend of October 18-20=2C 2013
Last year I didn't find out about this until after the Business Analysis da=
y=2C so I joined in as a Tech Lead for Technical Analysis Day=3B it was hel=
d at the electronics museum near BWI. That took about half a day and they =
served lunch.
Since I was a Tech Lead=2C I felt I had to talk to both the non-profit stak=
eholders and business analyst so I knew what they had discussed and everyon=
e was on the same page. I met with the head of the org once=2C and we kept=
in occasional contact via email until that event weekend. Unfortunately t=
he BA for my project really did not do that great of a job re: requirements=
/scope and documentation=2C so I had to do a lot of juggling and clarificat=
ion.
If you're a tech lead=2C you must figure out ahead of time what services wi=
ll be needed and then let the organizers know. They'll go out and find ven=
dors who will provide that service to the non-profits at a discount. Last =
year I asked for a shared hosting provider that provided PHP and MySQL acce=
ss.After the Technical Analysis Day=2C there will be a list of projects wit=
h their associated goals and technologies. If you want to volunteer as a d=
eveloper=2C that's when you can sign up. Everyone on the project has acces=
s to a shared document repository.
For the actual event itself it's a whole weekend=3B last year it was held a=
t the comp sci eng building @ UMBC from 5pm Fri to 5pm Sun. They served br=
eakfast=2C lunch=2C and dinner=2C and it was the first time I ever had Mons=
ter Java - it was quite good. (If you have any food issues pls let them kn=
ow.) Some people stayed overnight=3B I lived close enough that I went home=
each night. They also had non-technical volunteers who helped with the fo=
od and kid-sitting. (Note: if you guys know of anyone non-technical who wa=
nts to volunteer=2C tell them about this.) As far as the non-profit is con=
cerned=2C I assume their stuff still works. I have not been in contact wit=
h them since the end of the event=2C and no one is obligated to provide sup=
port after the event. It is what it is.
Equipment-wise you need to provide your own laptop=3B extension cords are h=
ighly recommended.
