------------------------------
Greetings All,
For our July 13th meeting we'll be welcoming back Berend Tober who will be
presenting his game 'Fairwinds'! This is a multi-player on-line game about
strategy and math. The game involves trading, skills development, and
business sense applied in finance, real estate, labor, commodity, and debt
markets. Player interaction with the game is by means of structured query
language (SQL) statements used to place trade orders and list information
about the game and other players activities.
Be sure to bring your laptop with you to participate in playing the game
after the presentation! Check out the tutorial link at the end of this
announcement for instructions on how to configure your computer to play the
game.
*Description: *
Fairwinds is a multi-player on-line game that involves real-time,
competitive trading on five simulated markets by using the psql client to
enter basic SQL commands.
This talk will present an overview of the application and discuss some
design and architecture issues underlying its development.
Some updates to Fairwinds based on user feedback since the last
presentation include:
New labor and wealth categories related to resource extraction (mining).
Ability to store user scripts in data base.
New user initialization scheme that compels cooperative behavior in
order to advance in standings.
An optional Bash script interactive menu interface.
We will devote the final half of the meeting to actually playing the game,
so bring your computer with network connectivity and the psql client
software ready to connect to a data base server.
You will want to read the "Fairwinds Overview" and "Fairwinds Tutorial" in
advance as well as possibly enjoy the "Fairwinds Equations" reference page
available at https://github.com/bmtober/fairwinds. These documents will
prepare you to be a competitive player.
*Speaker*: Berend Tober has been a PostgreSQL user for over 15 years. His
experience includes both private industry and federal government roles in
systems modeling, network administration, software development and data
base management.
The meeting will take place at OmniTI, located in Fulton, MD. The
address is 11830 West Market Place Fulton, MD 20759. The building is
near the Harris Teeter, easily seen from the road. When you approach the
HT head on, the OmniTI office is to its right.
We'll be using the back entrance which is surrounded by plants which
will lead directly to the meeting room.
Be sure to show up from 6:30 until 7 for pizza. Our pizza is unsponsored
this month so we will be asking for donations. The meeting will start
about 7pm.
