Hi,
I assumed this would be easy, but apparently
it's not - I need to turn in my final paper in
either PDF of Postscript format, but now I see
that OpenOffice does not produce either of those
two formats. The tools the university recommends
are either Windows-only or cost a fair bit. The
only option I see as possible from my Ubuntu
distro is Tex (which can output both ps and pdf)
but I've always found Tex a bear to use (and I
ought to be spending my time finishing my
paper and not learning tex to compose my paper.)
Any suggestions?
Thanks very much - Ed

I believe that OpenOffice can save as a PDF. The other option is to install
the cups-pdf printer and then you can print right to a PDF file. I used
this with a2ps often to hand in assignments in school as it highlights code
and puts 2 pages on one sheet in a very nice layout.

In openoffice: file - print and select print to file. You can choose
either PDF or PS.

It has been my goal for some time to learn to use DocBook
<a class="moz-txt-link-rfc2396E" href="http://docbook.org/"><http://docbook.org/></a>. There is support to transform the DocBook
format to almost any format I've heard of. I see Ubuntu has
'docbook' and 'docbook-xsl-doc-pdf' packages that should give the
capability you seek.
Try this command to see more: apt-cache search ^docbook
There is also asciidoc <a class="moz-txt-link-rfc2396E" href="http://www.methods.co.nz/asciidoc/"><http://www.methods.co.nz/asciidoc/></a> which
uses simple markup and can generate DocBook (or HTML).

Sorry for the repeat, Ed. I replied thinking it would go to the
