That took about half a day and they served lunch.

Since I was a Tech Lead, I felt I had to talk to both the non-profit stakeholders and business analyst so I knew what they had discussed and everyone was on the same page. I met with the head of the org once, and we kept in occasional contact via email until that event weekend. Unfortunately the BA for my project really did not do that great of a job re: requirements/scope and documentation, so I had to do a lot of juggling and clarification.

If you're a tech lead, you must figure out ahead of time what services will be needed and then let the organizers know. They'll go out and find vendors who will provide that service to the non-profits at a discount. Last year I asked for a shared hosting provider that provided PHP and MySQL access.

After the Technical Analysis Day, there will be a list of projects with their associated goals and technologies. If you want to volunteer as a developer, that's when you can sign up. Everyone on the project has access to a shared document repository.

For the actual event itself it's a whole weekend; last year it was held at the comp sci eng building @ UMBC from 5pm Fri to 5pm Sun. They served breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and it was the first time I ever had Monster Java - it was quite good. (If you have any food issues pls let them know.) Some people stayed overnight; I lived close enough that I went home each night. They also had non-technical volunteers who helped with the food and kid-sitting. (Note: if you guys know of anyone non-technical who wants to volunteer, tell them about this.) As far as the non-profit is concerned, I assume their stuff still works. I have not been in contact with them since the end of the event, and no one is obligated to provide support after the event. It is what it is.

Equipment-wise you need to provide your own laptop; extension cords are highly recommended.

hth,

- Joe

If you type "Google" into Google, you can break the Internet. -- Jen Barber

> Date: Tue, 7 May 2013 18:49:46 -0400
> From: jjsansing@verizon.net
> To: calug@unknownlamer.org
> Subject: Re: [CALUG] For anyone interested in volunteering...
>
> What is the schedule, in other words, do I need to take a week off from
> work or just a couple of hours a day for a week?
>
>
> Joe Tseng wrote:
> > If you're not interested in joining, then that's your choice.
> >
> > For those who are interested, you get to pick:
> > - the non-profit/project you're most interested in
> > - the technology you're most comfortable with
> > - if you're a PM/lead, you can dictate the project goals/technologies
> > and products used.
> >
> > I know the main organizer uses MS technologies, but for this event
> > they welcome all people and skills.
> >
> > I hope that clear things up.
> >
> >
> > If you type "Google" into Google
> > <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google>, you can break the Internet. --
> > Jen Barber
> >
> >
> > ------------------------------------------------------------------------
> > From: brian@harnish.net
> > Date: Tue, 7 May 2013 18:03:06 -0400
> > Subject: Re: [CALUG] For anyone interested in volunteering...
> > To: joe_tseng@hotmail.com
> > CC: calug@unknownlamer.org
> >
> > On Tue, May 7, 2013 at 5:31 PM, Joe Tseng <joe_tseng@hotmail.com
> > <mailto:joe_tseng@hotmail.com>> wrote:
> >
> >
> > So, no, they don't make Linux solutions?
> >
> > Seems this list is being userped by Microsofties.
> >
> > - Brian
> > ------------------------------------------------------------------------
> >
> > _______________________________________________
> > CALUG mailing list
> > CALUG@unknownlamer.org
> > http://lists.unknownlamer.org/listinfo/calug
> >
>
> _______________________________________________
> CALUG mailing list
> CALUG@unknownlamer.org
> http://lists.unknownlamer.org/listinfo/calug
