[CALUG] rpm packages and compression

just wondering...

As I recall from the prehistoric era,
the rpm packages contained basically a
tar of files, and also install/uninstall scripts
and few other things...

the tar was uncompressed.

The newer Fedora 12 uses rpm packages with a "newer"
compression scheme.

When did using compression in an rpm package start ?

The fedora 12 release looks to be 5 CD's, 4 full and
one partially full... the DVD iso is ~ 3.1 Gig.s Would
an "iso" benefit from a "diff" scheme ?

Being on dialup, I was wondering if anyone is using the "diff"
scheme to do package upgrades/updates?

thx,

Walt......
