Hi Walt,
I can't really answer your questions regarding re-encoding .mov files to
.mpg, but I do know a thing or two about DVD's. You are correct that a
true dvd video disc has a lot of structure to it. If you're interested I
can pull old specs out to describe exactly what all those directories
and files contain. The DVD spec does provide that all DVD players must
play both mpeg1 and mpeg2 files (if, of course, all the other structure
is in place). The good news is that pretty much all CD/DVD burning
software will create the correct DVD formatting these days. I'd be
shocked if there weren't many freeware tools out there to do the same
job. Additionally, many DVD players are designed to recognize and play a
regular CD or DVD containing jpeg or mpeg or even mp3 files and just
play them. That is, as mentioned, a model-specific feature. And by the
way, mpeg2 is very good quality, mpeg1 not so much unless encoded at a
very high rate.
